I was afraid to leave my room without my cell phone.

In case I needed to call for a rescue team!

It is truly lovely.

Places to explore, alligators to feed, and tons of restaurants.

My husband was attending a conference here and we were lucky enough to tag along.:)

That night we found Centennial Mall.

It has a California Pizza Kitchen, a Cheesecake Factory and an Anthropologie.

Week 6 in my 1 Peter Finding Encouragement in Troubling Times study we read 1 Peter 3: 8-12. It discusses the qualities of the ideal church and how important it is to love one another as brothers and sisters in the family of God. The qualities of the Ideal Church are as follows:

1- Harmony
2- Sympathy
3- Love
4- Humility

Sounds easy enough, right?
Not really.

Christians are just like other people. Sinners, but thankfully saved. Without God's help we have a tendency to gossip, judge others, and occasionally stir up conflict. Thank goodness we have God waiting to get us back on the right track!:)
I have met people in life that have rejected the Lord due to the church. Members have made them feel unloved and unwanted, which is a tragedy. They fall out of love with God because of wrongs that have taken place in church. When I see this it really hits home how important it is for churches to strive to achieve the above 4 qualities. Christians are not perfect, by any means, but we must attempt to support fellow believers, not reject them. How sad it is for God to see people turn away from Him because of church members! Be a light unto others, dear friends...

Tiaras, Alligator Turtles and Tacos on the Run

A tiara is appropriate attire when a young lady dines at the castle.

Yes, we had reservations.:)

We were on our way to Florida.

And Cinderella was expecting us.

There are 2 pictures of the plane because I am showing you how brave I am.

Normally I have sweaty palms and count down the minutes until we land.

It is pretty, though, don't ya think?

We hit the ground running as we had a lot to do!

My parents were waiting at the airport for us (because they are amazing like that).

We had the Super Bowl, Downton Abbey, Alligator Turtle stories, Anthropologie, Yogurtland, Ybor City and more on our To Do List!

Don't forget the Taco Bus!

We weren't the first ones to eat here.:)

(Unless all the tacos wipe out while you are driving in your sister's VW convertible.)

We had to eat on the run. SO much to do in so little time!

Then we hit the most delicious Colombian bakery.

I wanted 2 of everything.

My girls were sweet enough to let me try their Custard Horn.

I do believe I heard the Hallelujah chorus! It was *that* good.

Then we drove by the Colombia restaurant.

My parents love it there.

Sheri and I have a lunch date here the next time I am in town.:)

Anthropologie was next!

It was my first visit and now I see what all the talk is about!

Eye candy all around....

The colors are easy on the eyes but not so much on the wallet.

That's what makes it special, though.

So, my sweet Mom found the one she had at home.

I'm going to start reading this tonight. The Beautiful Wife. I have to tell you that I am really excited about it. It focuses on something that I tend to take for granted. My marriage. I am already impressed with these words: What you focus on grows. Let's go.

Myhusband and I were reading a financial book about how to make your money growwhen one of the principles jumped off the page at me:

What you focus on grows.

Becauseit’s such a simple principle, I couldn’t get it out of my mind and beganapplying it to all areas of life, especially relationships.

Mostwomen have the desire to grow a more intimate relationship with their husband

yet few focus their desire long enough to do anything about it.
Thus, nothing changes.

Ignorance,
Distractions, and/or
hopelessness are often to blame.

Ishould know. Just 19 when I said, “I do”, I was ignorant about how togrow my marriage. Our pre-marriage counseling consisted of one two-hourmeeting with my pastor and that wasn’t enough to prepare me for the emotional,spiritual, and verbal abuse my husband doled out on a regular basis. The abuse produced pain and grief.
I could think of little else than surviving.

Hope for our future crumbled.

Overtime, I began sharing my pain with a fewtrusted, godly women. Venting my pain and hearing their honest feed-back helped me see that the abuseI was suffering wasn’t my fault.

I began seeing a Christian counselor whogave me tools that helped restore me to a place of strength and dignity.

Thebest choice I made was to dig into God’s word andfind out what He wanted to say to me about my marriage. In the Bible Ifound the following verses which applied to my situation:

· “…Your godly lives will speak to them[husbands] better than any words. They will be won over by watching yourpure godly behavior.” (I Peter 3:1,2) In place of preaching tomy husband, I began entrusting my difficult situation to God throughprayer—listening for His instruction.

· “Instead,we will hold to the truth in love…” (Ephesians 4:15) I began to exchangepreaching for speaking the truth in love—in as few words as possible.

· “Seethat no one pays back evil for evil, but always try to do good…” (IThessalonians 5:15) On my new path, I chose to respond in kindnessand enforce healthy boundaries in place of angry retaliation.

WhenI dug into the word, I learned that my husband wasn’t the only one sinning. My responses to Tom were often sinful and myresponse was the only thing I was responsible for.
(What I wantedwas to change my husband but I couldn’t find a biblical reference to support mydesire and neither will you)!

Focusedon God and His Word, I was able to reverse negative behavioral patterns inmy life which had long plagued me.

When I did what I could do—keeping my focus on God, HE DID WHATI COULD NOT!

He healed me and ultimately my marriage—tothe praise of His glorious grace!

What you focus on grows.

The Secret of the Old Clock, Cheesecake and Paper Dolls

The Secret of the Old Clock.

Carson Drew's Cheesecake.

Nancy Drew Paper dolls.

It was a good first meeting of my sleuths.:)

I was not intimidated by the spring form pan.
Well, maybe just a bit.

Carson Drew's Cheesecake (from Nancy Drew Cookbook)

2 8 oz. packages of cream cheese
2/3 cup of sugar
3 eggs
1/4 tsp. almond extract

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Gradually add sugar to cream cheese and mix thoroughly.
Break eggs into the cream cheese mixture one at a time. Stir each time you add an egg.
Pour in almond extract and mix well. Put mixture into springform pan. Bake 50
minutes. Serves 4-6.

Crumb Crust

2 cups graham cracker crumbs
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup melted butter

Mix crumbs and sugar in a bowl. Add melted butter and mix well. Press
onto sides and bottom of an 8 inch springform pan. Chill in refrigerator
before adding filling.

Straight to the Heart of Matthew- Kregel Blog Tour

I have been enjoying the Straight to the Heart devotional series by Phil Moore for the past month. The particular book was Straight to the Heart of Matthew. There are a number of reasons I really liked it.

#1- Phil Moore gets right to the point. In an entertaining and engaging way he educates without talking down to you. I liked his style and wanted to read more! In fact, I even brought the book along on vacation.:)

#2- The chapters are short. (3-4 pages) It's amazing how much information is packed into a mini lesson. This gives you time to ponder and pray.

#3- Phil Moore talks in a language you can understand. You won't need a dictionary or even the Bible when you read, yet you will learn quite a lot. He talks to you, not at you.

I would recommend the Straight to the Heart series to all of you. I am sure that I will be purchasing more in the future as I really got a lot out of studying the book of Matthew with Phil Moore.

Below is a sample of the Pie Charts that show what your child has mastered and what they still need to learn. It's individualized and very detailed. I really liked this and so did my girls. It was a great sense of accomplishment to fill in the pie pieces! (Reminded me of the game Trivial Pursuit!)

Below is an example of ALEK's Quick Tables which are for 3rd grade and up. It helps your child to master multiplication, division, addition and subtraction.

Here is an example of the Master Account for parents. It will show you your child's progress and the Pie Chart which shows what your child has mastered and still needs to master. It also allows you to create quizzes, edit quizzes, view quiz results and more.

I loved using ALEKS with my girls. I knew at any certain time what they were working on and still needed to master. I loved having help at the click of the mouse! I plan on continuing to use ALEKS as our Math program. It's extremely helpful and user friendly!

1 Peter Finding Encouragement in Troubling Times- Week 5

Week 5 in my 1 Peter Inductive Bible Study (by Sue Edwards) we read 1 Peter 3:1-7. It was quite interesting in describing how wives and husbands should relate to each other. Sarah and Abraham were used as an example in this study. What I found most interesting was two particular behaviors that are beautiful in a woman- in God's eyes. The qualities are "purity"and "reverence" and they are quite different from what the world views as beautiful. A gentle spirit is also something that God sees as beautiful. Hmmmm..... I feel most beautiful when I have my make-up on, my hair styled and I am wearing an outfit (with no elastic in the waist, thank you very much). But then, I thought about what God sees as beautiful. Would I rather chat with a lady that looks like she stepped out of a magazine but is negative and hateful or a lady that has her hair in a crazy ponytail and is wearing sweats yet sparkles from the inside out? I'm sure you know that answer to that question.:)

This week's study reminds me of a certain young lady that takes ballet with my daughter. She is about 16 years old and I have knows her for quite a few years. She has some issues with her skin, does not wear the latest fashions, and may not be known as the "pretty" girl. But, I am here to tell you that this young lady is beautiful inside and out and I am proud to know her. She is an amazing role model. She is polite, charming, encouraging, and has a smile that lights up the room. She is the most beautiful dancer, too. When she is on the stage and the music starts this precious young lady *sparkles*! She dances for the Lord and you feel it! In God's eyes she is absolutely beautiful and she is. Purity, reverence and a gentle spirit are all there. I strive to be more like her. You can learn from someone who is much younger than yourself.:)

My Thoughts:

The Mysterious Epigenome provides an interesting look into the human cell and DNA. It also introduced me to the genome and epigenome, both of which I had never heard of before. The epigenome is "the multilayered, tightly coordinated, adaptable genetic control system that holds the key for improving human life".

I was fascinated by the knowledge that we are influenced by our DNA but that the genome and epigenome also play a large part. We can help to control our health and the health of our children, grandchildren, etc. through our epigenome. Wow. Test results with rats have shown that, "something as subtle as a nutritional change in the pregnant mother rat could have such a dramatic impact on the gene expression of the baby". "Caring for one's epigenetic health, especially during childhood, youth, and child-bearing years, can help to contribute to epigenetic health-and the overall health- of generations to come". There have also been studies done in older adults. "There is some evidence that certain kinds of drugs may be useful in altering the epigenetic processes involved in aging". This means there is the potential for a longer life span. There is hope for all of us!

These are the four basic health guidelines that promote epigenetic health:

1) Don't Smoke. Smoking does extensive epigenetic damage.

2) Have a Healthy Diet rich in methyl-donor foods. (Examples: Spinach, Asparagus, Egg Yolks, Whole Milk, Chicken, Tuna, Whole Grains)

3) Keep a Positive Mental Attitude- This helps you to handle stressful situations once they arise.

4) Exercise

Not only are these good rules for a healthy life they also contribute to epigenetic health. It's incredible to learn that we have more control over our life (and future generations) than we once thought!

See-N-Spell- TOS Review

When I first received the See-N-Spell quick reference guide I was skeptical. It's a thin book with commonly misspelled words along with homophones and definitions. The words are listed alphabetically, like a dictionary, but it is much easier to use. Would it really help my girls, though? The answer is "Yes". Both of my girls *hate* using the dictionary. They know how to use one but the sea of words are overwhelming! The See-N-Spell quick reference guide is just that- quick- which equates to less frustration.:) By using the reference guide they are able to easily check their spelling, locate homophones for writing assignments and also check definitions. I was pleased!

I was also sent one of the See-N-Read reading tools. It's a small plastic tool that is placed on the page of a book to help one focus on the words they are currently reading. It's genius! It cuts down on distractions and word and line-skipping, which helps improve reading fluency and comprehension. Amazing!

Beyond Molasses Creek Blog Tour and Giveaway

I knew from the very first sentence that I was going to fall in love with Beyond Molasses Creek. In fact, it's my new favorite book. "When I was a girl, I would lie on the banks of Molasses Creek with soft green grass beneath my back and look up into the sky, dreaming of being there." The book, written by Nicole Seitz, is beautifully written- almost like a painting with words. The three main characters, Ally Green, a spirited 60 year old flight attendant who has become quite disillusioned with life, Vesey Washington, a dear, faithful friend from her youth, and Sunila Kunari, a young woman attempting to escape from slavery in the rock quarries of Nepal. They come together in the most amazing way, but I won't tell you how. It would be cruel of me to take that joy away from you!
I loved all the characters, especially Vesey Washington. He reminded me so much of Hoke in the movie, Driving Miss Daisy. He is kind, patient, funny and faithful at all times. He has such hope for life and what God has in store for us. Vesey has certainly suffered many times in his life but he remains positive through it all. The flashback stories of Vesey and Ally were absolutely enchanting! Such adventures (and trials) they had shared on their path to the realities of life. They were magnificent together.
I loved the book, The Help, and Beyond Molasses Creek, touched my heart in the same way. The characters are absolutely larger than life and real enough to linger with you long after the story is over. I kept wishing there was more to read! Thank you so much Nicole Seitz for this tremendous story. I cannot wait to read more of your books.:)

The land of Ray is a wonderful place where you can find magical flowers, return gems to the elves and even rescue a princess all while reinforcing and learning math skills! Math Rider has created this ingenious math facts game! I was thrilled when I was asked to review it and the timing could not have been better. I was out of ideas for learning multiplication facts with my daughter and was ready to get the flash cards out again. Boo hiss! While reviewing addition, subtraction and/or multiplication and division your child encounters a story in Math Rider that involves them in a quest. Riding their horse, Shadow, through the Enchanted Forest, Dragon Realm, Elven Lands and more they jump (and solve) hurdles of math facts. The math facts are repeated (and solved for you if you answer incorrectly or too slowly) to reinforce them and help your child to learn. WAY better than flash cards. Yes, ma'am! From Math Rider's website: "Each operation (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) contains four quests, ranging from easy to master." My daughter and I had tried everything to learn multiplication and this was the one thing that truly engaged her and made her *want* to learn. She wanted to complete her quests and this made me one happy Mom!

Math Rider's graphics are lovely and the narrator of the story has the most charming voice!

The top of the screen keeps track of the time and points earned. There is also a screen with a map that shows how far you have gone on your quest and how much further you need to go for completion. My daughter loved being able to see how far she progressed. Parents will appreciate an additional page that shows facts mastered and facts that need to be worked on by your child (shown below).

1 Peter Finding Encouragement in Troubling Times- Week 4

This week in 1 Peter Finding Encouragement in Troubling Times we studied 1 Peter 2:11-25. It talks about believers living good lives in an increasingly un-Christian world. It's not easy. We are shown through society that we should demand an equal voice and expect the same opportunities as everyone else. Fair is fair, right? Well, Peter teaches us that the world's way is not necessarily the right way. The Bible says in 1 Peter 2:13 "Submit yourselves for the Lord's sake to every human institution, whether to a king as the one in authority."
Oh, my. I certainly blew that this week. It is almost impossible to not expect the same opportunities as everyone. With the grace of God, I know I can at least attempt to work toward this, though. Earlier this week I had something that I felt was quite unfair happen that involved my child. I was beyond angry. It's one thing to have something happen unfair to yourself but when it involves a family member, especially a child, it's near to impossible not to react. After reading Peter I see that I handled things in a very ungodly way. Guess I have my work cut out for me! This event raised my blood pressure and caused me to say harsh words. If only I had acted like the prophet Daniel when he was kidnapped and ordered to eat food that was not kosher. Daniel submitted to authority but also maintained his integrity. I will certainly pray for the wisdom to be able to do this in future when adversity comes my way.

Enter Cade O'Brien. Cade is a dashing man in his late 30's (yes, you can still be dashing as you near 40!) who is content to be single, or so he thinks. Cade's relationship with his grandfather, Ian O'Brien, gives the book a bit of warmth and humor, that I found thoroughly charming. If you enjoy fast paced, thrilling stories set in exotic locations, The Sound of Red Returning is for you!

Cooper and Me and the Military, written by Monique and Alexa Peters, is a wonderful children's book that addresses the issue of children being separated from a parent or parents who serve in the armed forces. The brightly colored pages and rhyming story is a joy to read, in fact my daughter read it to herself and then asked my husband to read it to her again before bed. She has asked me to read it to her tomorrow, too.:)

Each Cooper and Me book has a fun adventure but it also teaches an important life lesson and includes interactive materials. I found Cooper and Me and the Military to be a heartwarming story and I thought it was charming how the author included a letter at the end with fill in the blanks to encourage letter writing to service men and women. What a wonderful job the military does keeping our country safe! Writing letters is a small but very thoughtful gesture and I plan on doing just that with my girls this week.

There are also discussion questions that cover story comprehension and even emotions. Cooper and Me and the Military is a lovely book that would be enjoyed by any family, not just one with members in the military. We all are separated at times and we all miss loved ones. This book is a gentle way to discuss how that feels and what you can do about it.

1 Peter Finding Encouragement in Troubling Times- Week 3

Week 3 in my 1 Peter Bible Study (Finding Encouragement in Troubling Times) I learned that God has called us all to be priests. This is certainly a daunting task! 1 Peter 2:5 states "you also as living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house for a holy priesthood..". This applies to both men and women, although it's not easy for many women. We often second guess ourselves and have self doubts- much more so than men. This is very true for me. If you asked me to write a list of my strengths I would struggle but my list of weaknesses would be quite extensive! Why are we, as women, like that? God needs both men and women to step up. 1 Peter 2:9 says, "But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God's own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called out out of darkness into His marvelous light.". Time to check your insecurities at the door!

I am not a natural born leader but there are many men and women who are happy to fill that role. I once though that made me less important and less needed. I was so wrong! God allows me to shine in different areas that are a bit more "behind the scenes".:). I love working with children and have friends that would rather have a root canal! It took me a long time to realize that God places us where He needs us and that I am important, even though I am not "front and center". I'm happy to send the spotlight elsewhere, dear friends. Wherever your strengths are be sure to shine your brightest as God needs each and every one of us to do just that.

Four Letter Words review and giveaway!

I just finished the most amazing and life changing book called Four Letter Words. Wow! Where should I start? I highlighted sentences, underlined quotes and read pages aloud to my husband. Everyone, Christians and non-believers alike, should read this book! It answers questions that many are too afraid to discuss. The author, Bill Giovannetti, is entertaining as he enlightens the world to the truth of the Bible and God. This book will change your life and possibly save it.

The four letter words addressed are as follows:

-TRUE

-KNOW

-PAIN

-OUCH

-EVIL

-WORD

-DAMN

-WAIT

-HOPE

Each chapter covers "Touchy Ideas" and "Touchy Scriptures" before address the subject. For example, in the chapter of "EVIL" one "Touchy Idea" is "Evil originated with Satan, and entered the human race through mankind's free choice." "EVIL" is not an easy subject to talk about but Giovannetti does an amazing job of helping us do just that. He goes on to give us "Touchy Scriptures" to reinforce what the Bible says about each topic. At the end of the chapter there are "Talking Points"- my favorite part! Bill Giovannetti wrote these just for me! In a loving and compassionate way, he discusses how to talk to others about what you have learned.

One of chapters, "OUCH", really hit home with me. In it C.S. Lewis is quoted as saying, "You asked for a loving God: you have one. The great spirit you so lightly invoked... is present: not a senile benevolence that drowsily wishes you to be happy in your own way... but the consuming fire Himself, the Love that made the worlds...". God LOVES us so very much and wants us to follow Him. Free will is a choice, but there is a very dear price to pay. "He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son does not have life." (1 John 5:11, 12)

I was greatly encouraged by Four Letter Words. The book answered so many of my questions about other religions, why evil exists and bad things happen as well as why I believe what I believe. Faith is a huge part but there is so much more to share! Four Letter Words has strengthened my faith and shown me that telling friends and acquaintances about God is absolutely necessary. I am better equipped and more confident because of Bill Giovannetti's study of difficult questions. *This book is a must read for everyone!*

Cinderella auditions were today.

I don't get up early for just anyone.

We shall see...

This reminds me of a story. Years and years ago when I was in high school I auditioned for the drill team. I wanted it *so* badly and practiced every day with my boombox (dating myself here) in the backyard. The routine was to "Footloose" and it was awesome. I knew every step, every move, every second of it. BUT, when it was my turn to perform I focused so hard on the steps that I forgot to smile.:( Later, a girl who shall remain nameless (Sonia) got up to dance and messed the routine up royally. It was pitiful! She had missed practices and I think she thought the whole thing was a joke. BUT, she *SMILED - A LOT*. When the results were in, she was invited to be on the team and I, sadly, was not.

The lesson here is not to focus so much on the steps of life that you forget to smile, dear friends.:)

Slow Cooker Tacos

I made this recipe last night and everyone loved it. (Well, 3 out of 4) It has lots of flavor and it's healthy. Yes, healthy and delicious! Break out your crock pot and give it a try~

Beefy Tacos

1 pound ground turkey
1 yellow onion
4 cloves garlic, chopped
1 can (16 oz.) refried beans (I used fat free)
1 jar (16 oz.) salsa
1 cup shredded sharp cheese
12 corn/flour tortillas
2 tomatoes, chopped
2 cups shredded lettuce
1/3 cup lowfat sour cream

In a large skillet over medium-high heat, stir beef and onion until brown and cooked through, about 6 min. Add garlic, stir frequently. Drain excess fat and transfer to crock pot. Stir in refried beans, salsa, and cheese. Cover and let simmer until mixture is cooked through and bubbling, 3-4 hours on high or 5-6 hours on low. Stir and serve over warm tortillas; top with tomatoes, lettuce and a bit of sour cream. Enjoy!

For dessert, try fresh raspberries over Activia brand Vanilla Yogurt. It is divine.

Unhallowed Ground book review

Thomas atte Bridge is found hanging "from the limb of an oak at Cow-Leys Corner" and it appears to be a suicide. In reality it's something far more sinister. Thomas atte Bridge is beyond despicable and few, if any, will mourn his passing. Despite this, Hugh de Singleton, a medieval surgeon and detective, is determined to seek justice for the scoundrel of a man. Thus, Unhallowed Ground, written by Mel Starr, shows itself to be exciting from the very first page!

Unhallowed Ground is a clever mystery that both entertains and educates. The book begins with a glossary of medieval terms to enrich the reader's experience. Initially I was a bit intimidated, but I quickly grew to embrace the new vocabulary and enjoy my trip back in time. Characters were interesting and well written and I really enjoyed getting to know the main character, Hugh de Singleton. He is a "real" character with doubts and mistakes, yet he is able to use his knowledge for the better good.
Being immersed in the medieval period brought many topics to light. I was amazed at the types of taxes and penalties that were enforced, including a tax on unwed mothers! Cataract surgery and C-sections, as well as other medical issues, are addressed in a basic way as they were new and not commonly used during the Middle Ages. How wonderful it is to live in modern times!
Unhallowed Ground is the 4th chronicle of Hugh de Singleton. The Unquiet Bones, A Corpse at St. Andrews Chapel and A Trail of Ink are also in the series and I believe they would also prove to be quite enjoyable!

Alienation is inspired by the life of King David in the Bible. Jon Lewis does a wonderful job of creating a contemporary and unlikely hero with parallels to the life of David. 1 Peter Finding Encouragement in Troubling Times- Week 2

I continued my study of 1 Peter Finding Encouragement in Troubling Times, written by Sue Edwards, this week. Lesson 2 focused on 1 Peter 1:13- 2:3. The verse that really spoke to my heart was 1 Peter: 2:1. God commands us to “put aside all malice and all guile and hypocrisy and envy and all slander.” Wow. That is a lot to ask of us Christians! Don’t get me wrong, I’m certainly not this loud mouthed babe that walks around hating on people! It’s just that in my heart of hearts I do covet, I do judge and I do get my feelings hurt which in turn causes me to often react negatively. Sad to say, my mouth sometimes get the better of me. This doesn't sit well with the Lord and I need to work harder to not get so caught up in this world. God commands in Romans 12:2, “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what the will of God us, that which is good and acceptable and perfect". In order for me to show others what God is all about, I need to check myself- often. sigh. It’s not easy, but God is always there to help us, guide us, in loving others. It takes too much energy to hate. God tells us to “fervently love one another from the heart” in 1 Peter 1:22. In this way, we all win!

God is certain and constant. We know that He has a plan for us and it’s always for the good, even though we may not understand. When times are difficult and I am being held captive in fear by the devil, I pray. God is always there to hold me in the palm of His hand. That is when God’s light shines the brightest! Walking through life on Easy Street keeps us far from God. I am certainly not a fan of anxiety or fear, but it does bring me closer to the Lord, and that’s the best place to be.:) Like a child that strays from his parents and onto a road full of fast moving cars, how wonderful it feels to be back by their parent’s side!

"The Shadow of Your Smile" review and Blog Tour!

I really enjoyed the way that Susan May Warren helped Noelle and Eli to rediscover each other again. Due to his wife's memory loss, Eli must go back to the beginning, and start again. In this way they both relearn who they truly were (before the tragic loss of their daughter) and in many ways still are. The only problem is that there are secrets that may hold them back from a future together. There is a lot of humor and a lot of tenderness, as well as raw emotion. I was rooting for them both as they fought to recapture what they once had. Beautifully written and heartfelt.

It's that time of year again.

Time to go to the doctor.

Or is it?

A precious friend of mine, who is also a naturopathic doctor, has shown me there are options.

You don't always have to drag yourself or your children to the waiting room where they can pick up every kind of sick bug known to man.

Colloidal Silver is our new best friend. It fixed my husband's Strep Throat and you can even use
it for pink eye and ear infections! YES!

The Organic Lemon Echinacea Throat Coat (pictured above) was my husband's favorite. He said it really made his throat feel better. Plus, it tastes good!

Echinacea is wonderful for boosting immunity and Airborne has been a good helper, too.

Zarbee's is our newest favorite. My youngest really likes the taste, it helped her throat feel better and helped her sleep. The box is pretty darn cute, too. We bought it at Walgreens.

Time with Dad

My Dad came for a visit last week. He is some kind of wonderful.

There was a lot of smiling going on.:)

Civil War doctor's equipment...

vintage cameras...

and art museums were on the menu.

We also visited book stores in hopes of finding treasure.

We lingered as the books were never-

ending!

It was cold and the older books were musty
and fabulous. Like exploring an old attic.

Do you love books as much as we do?

He made friends with folks and they loved
him. No surprise.:)

We also went to see "Tin Tin"! Steven Spielberg does it again! Full of action and suspense- you really must go see it!

It was not easy to see my Dad go. The trip
in the car was quiet as we dreamed of things we
would do on his next trip...

Homeschooling - YES!

Most people are quite supportive about the fact that we home school- at least to my face. One library lady (mhmmmm...) did ask if my girls ever spend time with other children. Huh? Someday I am going to just go off and lose it with questions like this! My girls spend time with other children, friends even!, every day. Not only that, they get to actually talk with them. When my oldest was in public school she rarely, if ever, got to talk with her friends. No talking in the classroom, no talking in line, and get this- no talking in the lunch room??! If they were caught talking they were isolated and had to eat all alone in the corner. When does all the so called socialization occur? Makes me wonder.
Home schooling works for us for a number of reasons and I don't see us stopping anytime soon. I try not to judge people that send their kids to school as I know there are a number of good reasons for them choosing this path for their family. (Getting their nails done is not one of them.) But, I do get very angry when I frequently read facebook posts about parents that hate having their children at home. They can't wait for them to grow up and move away?? Then why did they have children in the first place??

And, yes, we do school in our pajamas.:)

A Mile in His Shoes review and GIveaway!

Last night I watched"A Mile in His Shoes" with my daughters, ages 9 and 13. As you can see from the DVD cover, the movie is about baseball. Oh, but there is so much more to the story. "A Mile in His Shoes" is an inspirational movie from the director of "Angels in the Outfield". It's based on the true story of a young man, Mickey Tussler, with Asperger's Syndrome (a form of autism). Mickey has an amazing pitcher's arm and through a wonderful twist of fate, baseball coach Arthur Murphy discovers Mickey and his gift. The path to the minor league is not an easy one, though. Mickey's parents are unsure if it's the right direction for their son, a team member has malicious intentions due to jealousy and Mickey struggles with the complications of autism. "A Mile in His Shoes" will make you think, make you smile and make you cheer. Dean Cain plays the role of Coach Arthur "Murph" Murphy, an everyday hero that goes out of his way to change a young man's life and ends up also changing his own life in the process. Coach Murphy and Mickey Tussler show us that the only limitations we truly have are the ones we put on ourselves. You will be inspired! My girls and I loved it!

The Big Book of American Trivia review and giveaway!

Trivia fascinates me. I may not know where I left my phone, but I can tell you that minoxidil is used for treating hair loss and that male seahorses- not female seahorses- give birth to their young. 1 Peter study and review- Week 1

Have you ever felt persecuted for your faith? For many years I felt safe and protected, as I knew my relationship with God was strong, yet I struggled with sharing it with others. I'm certainly not ashamed of my beliefs, but I do tend to shy away from conflict. It’s time for me to speak up.
1 Peter, written by Sue Edwards, is a Bible study created for women going through troubling times. We have all been there whether it’s through relationships with others, our marriage, illness, general disappointments and other adversities. Sue Edwards “shows women how to stand strong, respond, and even rejoice in the face of life’s disappointments.” The study is 9 weeks long and over the next 9 weeks I will post about my personal thoughts and lessons learned through 1 Peter. Each lesson includes 3 levels of study to choose from depending on the time you have available and the amount of “digging” you wish to do in your journey.

I feel so amazingly blessed to live in a country where I can worship as I please. Praise the Lord! So many people must worship in secret and live in fear. I can’t even imagine what that is like. My friends, both believers and non-believers, know that I am a Christian. I am rarely persecuted, thankfully, but I believe that my non-believing friends hold me to a higher standard. Some believe that as a Christian I am supposed to love and agree to everyone and everything, although this isn’t true. God has commanded us to love our neighbors but we don’t have to agree with the way they live their lives. I do believe that as time goes by Christians will be persecuted more and more. This is a frightening thought but Sue Edwards explains to us that that is why we go through rough patches in our lives. God puts us through trials so that we can strengthen our faith and become blessed for it. We are commanded to bring glory and honor to God and this requires effort on our part. God will not leave us even though we feel alone at times. I learned that in order for me to feel more confident in sharing God with others I must lean on the Lord and experience the life He has planned for me. There are often times I would like to do otherwise, but we all know who knows what’s best for us, don’t we? We learn about Peter, James and John who were personally trained by Jesus. They grieved for Him when He died on the cross but later went on to minister to others as valiant leaders. We must live by this amazing example.

At the end of each weekly lesson a "Living Stone" story is shared. This week we learn about Pastor Andy and his wife, Alice McQuitty. Alice McQuitty tells of her husband's battle with cancer and how through the experience they felt amazing peace. Yes, they were afraid, but not panicked. "God is faithful in the best and worst of times, because that is who He is." I loved reading this as it was such a testament of their faith! Life's trials will come and go but God's love will always be there for us. God is so good!

Valentine's Day Decor without Spending a Penny

Spreading love around the house doesn't have to cost a lot. Use what you have. Challenge yourself!

1- Use color and sparkle from Christmas! These ornaments were tickled to bits to be able to show off a bit longer and the darling British flag ornament (from my sweet sister, Lindsay) is in the shape of a heart!

2- Red is such a fabulous color. Don't limit yourself to hearts. This mug is filled with Christmas ornament keys!

3- Cupid! Tiny accent pieces are a wonderful
addition to collections.

4- Show off your creations! Whether you sew,
dabble in paper arts, love photography, etc. now
is your time to shine. Save yourself some money
and "shop" at home!

5- Display things that make you smile. Just
add a little bit of love.:)

6- Make a swag with fabric you have been
saving for a rainy day. Rope, fabric and a
good movie (Crazy, Stupid Love!) will get
you one of these lovelies...

7- You don't have to decorate the whole
house. Just have fun and enjoy yourself.

We Bought a Zoo

We had the theater (almost) all to ourselves today. One of my favorite things! We watched "We Bought a Zoo" and it was wonderful- truly, wonderful. My husband said it's one of the best movies he's ever seen and I agree. It's a true story which makes it all the more amazing. Only one instance of foul language (Why do people think it's so "cute" when young children curse??) and no indecent exposure, if you catch my drift. A *great* movie for the whole family. Wish they made more movies like this.

Maestro Classics- TOS review

Learning with your child, without speaking a word. Maestro Classics make it possible. Their classic music CD series, which have won 45 national awards, entertains while they tell a story! We were given the opportunity to review Swan Lake and it was such a pleasure! While traveling to the dentist's office we were transported to a magical land where a reluctant Prince must choose his bride. He sees the most beautiful swan and finds out that she is really a lovely princess under a spell! Along with the music and the story we learned all about the composer, Tchaikovsky. I had no idea that he was painfully shy and had an anonymous benefactress! Music Education is often overlooked but Maestro Classics makes it an easy, fun, and enriching part of school. They even offer FREE curriculum activities on their website! My 9 year old ballerina (who I thought would be the biggest fan) really liked the CD but my 14 year old daughter was the one who enjoyed it the most! She even suggested that we purchase "Peter and the Wolf"! Guess what she got in her stocking for Christmas?:)

Z Guide to the Movie- TOS Review

I love, love, love movies and when I heard there was an opportunity to review a product that taught by using movies I was thrilled! Zeezok creates wonderful curriculum guides called Z Guides for elementary, middle and high schoolers. They are meant to be used as a supplement to your studies, not a core curriculum. I say, pop some popcorn and let's get to it!

My girls and I were given the Kit Kittredge Z Guide to the Movies to review. We are huge American Girl fans so this was a real treat! First we watched the movie and then we took a week to do the activities. You have the freedom to do as many or as little of the activities as you like and take as long as you like.
The Z Guide begins with a Topic Overview ,to give you background on the subject which is quite helpful. We were studying The Depression and there was a lot of information provided that was new to me. There is also a movie synopsis. Here is how our week went:

Activity 1- Movie Review Questions- This really helped my girls (and me!) to pay attention. Even the opening credits provided information about the Depression.

Activity 2- Research the Great Depression- Questions are provided for further investigation. My girls, and myself, discovered quite a bit about the Dust Bowl, influenza during the Depression and True Story magazine. There were other suggestions but those are the areas I chose for them to research. Once again, you can do as little or as much as you like.

Activity 3- Learning about Hobo Codes- Interesting and fun! My girls decoded messages in Hobo Code (secret codes that hoboes used to communicate with each other)and also made their own codes.

Activity 4- Vocabulary that had to do with the Depression- ex. bonds, foreclosure and deadbeat.

Activity 5- Writing a Newspaper Article- My girls both chose a topic and wrote an article about it. They had to just use facts, like Kit, in the manner that would printed in a newspaper. My older daughter wrote about our dinner menu and our younger daughter wrote about the new playhouse that was in our backyard.

Activity 6- Fashion During the Depression- My girls worked together on a Powerpoint presentation of fashions for both men and women worn during the Depression. This was a first for them- and me!

Activity 7- Who Am I?- Identifying characters in the movie with clues provided.

Activity 8- Foreshadowing and Irony- Using parts of the movie as examples, my daughters identified foreshadowing and irony.

Activity 9- Prejudice during the Depression- We talked about the evidence of or lack of prejudice in parts of the Kit movie. Questions provided.

Activity 10- The Filmmaker's Art and Dramatic License- Examining why the director chose certain lighting, music, etc. to tell the story.

The Bee Man, Stern Fern, the mysterious Man in the Panama Hat and more are all interesting characters who come together in The Keeper, written by Suzanne Woods Fisher. The book begins with Julia, a beautiful but strong-willed Amish young lady, who has her heart broken by the same man- for the second time. I will admit that at the beginning she was not my favorite character, but I later discovered that first looks can be deceiving. She wants someone to blame for her heartache and strikes out at the handsome and wayward, Roman, also known as The Bee Man. All the girls are in love with him (except Julia!) but he’s just not interested in settling down. He has no ties to anyone and seems to have not a care in the world. Once again, appearances can be deceiving. Where does he come from? What is his story?
Along the way we are introduced to the members of Julia’s family- innocent and faithful Menno, unsure and soft spoken Sadie, tomboyish and spunky M.K. and their loving but ailing father, Amos Lapp. They are searching for guidance at Windmill Farm and it comes in a way they never expected. Each character has their faith tested but they discover that God was in control through it all. Such amazing reassurance! I really had no idea how the book would end and was held in delicious suspense!
The glimpse into the world of the Amish is delightful. I fell in love with the characters in “The Keeper”, especially Sadie as I saw so much of myself in her. Amish or not, you will see yourself in one or more of the richly written characters. I loved that you were given a chance to look into their thoughts and find their secrets and dreams. Laugh, cry and fall in love with The Keeper. It will be a book that you want to share with friends- just be sure they return it to you.:)

One Month to Live

If you are looking for a wonderful, inspiring book to start 2012 this one is it. One Month to Live, by Kerry and Chris Shook, will guide you in "30 days to a No-Regrets Life". It truly makes you think about what it takes to make each day, each moment, really matter in your life.
Each day is written with it's own chapter and topic along with "Make it Count Moments" (Questions to think about and ask yourself) and "Make it Last for Life" activities to really drive the idea home. Forgive people, stop judging others just to make yourself look better, fight fair, live with integrity, love completely and make a difference are some of the topics that are covered.
The personal stories and analogies in One Month to Live are wonderful! The chapter "Sandcastles" was one of my personal favorites. It describes how as children we build sandcastles and soon realize that they won't last. They soon will be washed away by the tide. As adults we create our own sandcastles in life called material possessions- but they will not last forever either. God doesn't mind us having material possessions but "We must learn to be givers rather than takers so that we can make a difference. Why would God want to bless us anymore if we're just going to hoard everything He gives us?" This really made me think about some of the choices I have made.
Another well written chapter was called "Starfish". It tells of a man that is walking along the beach and sees thousands of starfish stranded on the shore. They will soon die but he realizes he can't save them all so he just keeps walking. Later he sees a young boy throwing, as quickly as he can, starfish back into the ocean. The man tells the boy he is wasting his time and that it truly won't make a difference but the boy picks up another starfish and tells the man "I just made all the difference for that one." Wow. Even though the world is vast and we are but one person, we can still make a difference.

"RELAX" and "ORGANIZE"

Happy New Year! 2012 is like a beautifully wrapped gift for us all. What will we find inside? The possibilities are endless! My word for 2012 is going to be "RELAX". I don't know about you, but I *never* give myself permission to relax. I have to steal it on occasion and then feel guilty. Why? Not this year! I am going to be selfish and give myself one other word to work with- "ORGANIZE". I am the Queen of Piles. Oh my goodness. Piles of stuff in the kitchen, bedroom, school room, etc. Sigh... The key to relaxing is being organized and I am going to do my best to excel in both areas!

What is your word for 2012?

My family was generously given the download of the program to review. Right off the bat, the number of pages were overwhelming. I was intimidated and did not get a good feeling. No relaxing yet. I would recommend spending the extra money for the bound book.

Then, I sat down to see what the program offered. Wow. Everything is included. There is a weekly curriculum guide (see sample here), activity sheets (sample here), answer book, audio clips, and more. R.E.A.L. Homeschool Spanish is written by a homeschooling Mom, Dr. Karyn Williamson-Coria, and she truly knows what is needed to teach your family. Instead of constant drilling of Spanish, you incorporate the language into your every day life at home. Playing games, making puppet shows and collages are ways that you can relax and enjoy learning Spanish! While reviewing how to ask "Como Estas?" (How are you?) my girls enjoyed looking for pictures in magazines illustrating how people felt- happy, sad, bored, angry, etc. The activity sheets reinforced what they learned. While teaching, I learned quite a lot, too, and that is the beauty of this program. It's for the whole family!

The audio clips are very helpful, especially if you're not certain of how to pronounce the words and phrases. It's like having your own personal tutor. I also enjoyed the links to Spanish culture, history, recipes, videos and more. It makes for a very well rounded experience! Not only that, R.E.A.L. Homeschool Spanish sends emails to you with even more information. During the holidays, their email covered Mexican Christmas traditions including craft ideas! It's as close to an immersion program as you can get while in the comfort of your own home.:)
