You know how much I love the birdies... But, I have no idea what kind this one is?? Anyone? Anyone?
She has made a nest in our backyard! Look at the sweet little eggs... She was not too happy about me looking at them, let me tell you! I just had to have a tiny peek.:) 
Oh, and I am gearing up for my next swap! A Desert Island Swap! What would you take with you if you had 24 hours alone on an island???
Looks like a Sandpiper to me-I'm not 100% sure though.
ReplyDeleteI do know they act like they are wounded to try to lure predators away from their nest-Like sometimes they act like their wings are broke-Pretty amazing really. Most people miss their eggs/nest because of how they match with their enviroment.

Hmm, I don't know what kind of a bird is brave enough to lay her eggs in the backyard of someone with kids ;-) She's a pretty bird though. And what a fun swap Lori...very creative!

ReplyDeleteThen I'd take an umbrella, lots of water, a comfy lounge chair, sunscreen, a picnic which includes yummy sandwiches, lots of fruit and other tasty treats, my journal and pens, Bible, a couple of books I want to read, swimming suit and towels, warmer clothes if it gets windy. And perhaps my paints brushes.
It looks like a quail to me..the eggs def look like quail. She sure is pretty whatever she is! We have a mama sparrow in one of our blue spruce and her 3 eggs just hatched today! So precious!

Usually they will act wounded as if they have a broken leg to detract you from their nest.

I agree with Jamie......a brave bird to lay her eggs/nest on the ground. She's so vulnerable and has no protection. You don't have Coyotes now do you. Poor little bunny was being chased by skinny ole coyote the other mornin'. He made it to safety though.

Thanks so much everyone for your answers! It is a killdeer! I did a bit of research and found out that they nest on the ground as the eggs looks similar to rocks... They do not make a traditional nest, but use pebbles. Doesn't sound too comfy to me.:( The baby birds start running as soon as their feathers dry. Can you imagine?? I do so hope that they make it. Denise- We do not have coyotes- thank goodness! Lori

ReplyDeleteThanks so much of sharing your killdeer with us and her sweet nest. I am amazed the nest is actually on the ground! I do hope you get pictures of the babies when they hatch out and share them with us.
We had a nest of baby robins in the ivy on our house. I enjoyed watching the parents busily feeding their young during the past few weeks. Then last week the parents stopped feeding them and sat nearby calling to them to come out of the nest. They went in with beaks full of food and came out with their beaks still full. They were trying to entice them out. I waited and watched and then it got dark. The following morning they had all gone. They must have left very early. I was so sad I missed them.
Can't wait for The Desert Island Swap. I would take my cross-stitching! I might actually get some done if there were no other distractions in my life.

What I would take with me HMMM Of course my first choice would be my children only because they would make the deserted island so much happier... Um then of course food for them. If I cannot take them... then I would only want a couple notebooks and some pens so I could write them daily. I know corny but that is what I would do lol.

It is a Killdeer. They are so sweet and their call sounds like they are saying "killdeer, killdeer". Aren't those tiny eggs precious?

It looks like a killdeer. Killdeers will run away from their nest and act like it is hurt when you get close to their eggs. They have a way of laying eggs in the worst spots.
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure it's a killdeer too! They like to lure you away from their nest and pretend to be injured. They are cute birds!! The fact that her nest is on the ground is also a sign that she's a killdeer. what sweet pictures!!
