Mean Girls

I have never been a "mean girl". I have always reached out to others so that no one was excluded. It's just who I am.

Why is it that some girls put others down so they can raise themselves up?

Do men do this too?

Katie told me about a conversation that she had with a friend the other day. Mind you, these are 6 year old little girls...
Katie's friend- "My friend told me that I was fat. She said that SHE exercised every day so that she would be thin."
My Katie said, "I don't think you're fat. I think you're just the right size."
Katie's friend said, "I don't think you're fat either."
(Note- Katie's friend is darling and not a bit overweight. And even if she was, what gave that child the nerve to say such a thing???)
I am so glad to have met all of you "nice girls". I know that you're always there for me in case a "friend" of mine tells me I'm "fat".:)

  1. Argh! That is just so wrong and only 6 to boot. I've always been a nice girl too.

  2. I never could understand how one girl could cut another down. I don't think boys do that?? We should stick together. My 13 year old daughter just said to me last night, when discussing a bullying situation a friend of hers was having, "how could someone treat another human being that way??" She's so right, I just don't get it. It makes me sad to think about it.

Grateful for all of my nice friends too! Good point you made today!

  3. It is ridiculous how early some of these girls start getting away with being mean and rude to others. When Lexi was younger I always stopped any "mean" or rude behaviour that I heard instantly, and told her it was unacceptable. At 10 she is really sweet and wants to be kind and nice to everyone.

She is also struggling with two of her friends battling right now and she went to the counselor (at school) and asked her to talk to them and let them know name calling and being mean is not right or nice. I was proud of her for doing that.♥

  4. Oh, I love you.....hehe...but I really do for engendering this behavior in your daughter. My daughter who is 17 just told me the other day that she like friends who were boys over friends who are girls because they just don't do the drama......she abhors that kind of behavior. Thanks so much for making the world a nicer place! :)

  5. I really don't know if some girls are just born mean or if they pick up their ways from others. One thing I do know is that it breaks your heart as a parent when your child has trouble with mean girls. My friends with boys do not have this. I am glad Katie's friend has got dear Katie there to set the record straight for her. How very mean of that girl.
I am grateful too for the special friends I have made through blogging who are always there for me and make my life so much happier.

  7. Well, beyond the mean..why is a 6 year old concerned over weight and planned exercise...there is something deeper there.

  9. This is why so many of my friends were boys growing up. I even had guy locker partners.

I have NO idea why girls do this-It doesn't make them look better it makes them look petty.

But the fact of the matter is there are many girls out there like this! So sad.

It's a good thing you can "pick" your friends huh? Your little Katie has found a good one in her little Katie!

Hey... Have a great 3 day weekend!

  10. Oh my word...that is just crazy that a little girl would be talking about being fat. I wonder if the other girl{who said it} hears it at home or if her mom says it a lot. I certainly have a little extra to love, but I hope I am careful not to make it a big deal to my children. Although, Lilly did say one day that her face wasn't cute like her friends'. I was shocked to hear that out of her 4 year old mouth.
I've never been a mean girl, either. I do recalled being bullied a bit in high school. I just chalk it up to that girl not having a very good childhood.

  11. I take pride in being a "nice" girl...always have and I've raised my girls to be the same way! There's enough problems in the world as it is...a little kindness goes a long way!

  12. Sheesh...and it only gets worse. The girls in Cassie's high school were so mean and full of drama. Just don't get what their parents teach them...that it's okay to be mean and pick on kids! It's so sad.

  13. Lori I know exactly what you mean! Anna reads the back of food to find the fat content and how many calories everything has--she's only 7.

  15. That is just rotten! And at six??
Girls can be mean-I was never one, but experienced it. Very sad...

  16. Oh, Lori I think that's why we as parents need to show and lead by example! It was good that Katie could talk to you about it. It shows how compassinate she is, which I know you have shown her in the way you love and embrace people. Have a goodnight, XO Fran.

  17. Lori, you definately are a very kind person..I think maybe some Mommas just don't talk to their kiddos about not saying things that might hurt others..I have always tried to talk to my children about being very careful about what comes out of their mouth and that if it might make someone feel bad..don't say it! I think it's not just little girls though...little boys can be bad about it too..believe me!!
I love, love your new background!
I loved all the pictures that you used in this post...they were all gorgeous!!

  21. I don't know if you're a Sugarland fan, but their 'Mean Girls' song has been in my head since I saw your post in Google Reader this morning!

Katie seems to be such a sweet girl, and a great role model for others- props to you!!!

  22. Thanks for your comment and for following me back! It's great to meet another blogger that homeschools. I only wish we had "met" sooner!

We have always used Sonlight for our core curriculum, but this year, we're changing things up a bit. We're still following Sonlight loosely, but I'm also incorporating other things as well, because I'm a member of the TOS Crew reviewing homeschool products for my other blog The Homeschool Desk.

    Thanks for stopping by!

  23. How sad! The poor little girl who is already exercising to stay thin needs some extra lovin for sure. Hope you have a wonderful holiday weekend!

  24. Isn't it amazing (in a bad way) that girls can be that way. It reminds me of Nellie Olsen from Little House on the Prairie Days! I don't get it. Just have to instill in my girls how to respond and how to NOT be one of those girls.
    THanks for visiting my blog.
Tinkerbell confetti was at Party City. Do you have one? Best of luck with the party. Can't wait to see it! :)

  25. I've encountered plenty of mean girls in my life and try to avoid them. I am so grateful for you being one of my nice, sweet, dear friends. :)

  27. Kids (and big kids ;-) can be so mean...I've never understood it either. We should be supportive of each other, what's the purpose of anything else. Love that your daughter was so sweet to her friend. I've always been the one to take in the 'outcasts' too, to make everyone feel welcomed, etc...it's who I am too. I knew I liked you a lot Lori, tee hee.

    Jamie :)
