Kit and Hobo Stew

Check out the fabulous giveaway at She Hath Done What She Could!

Yesterday was our "Kit" American Girl class.

We made decorative clipboards. Kit would have enjoyed this as we used magazine pictures (American Girl catalog!) as a way of recycling. The word "recycling" was not used during the Depression but I believe that's when it began. Plus, Kit wants to become a reporter and every
great reporter needs a fancy clipboard.:)

It was wonderful to see all the girls' creativity in action!

We also worked on a Kit mystery puzzle (thanks Goodwill!). The mystery was solved thanks to a hobo code symbol in the pictures. The
hobo code was a series of pictures that hoboes would leave on fences,
barns, etc. to let other hoboes know what to expect. Danger, kind woman,
sleep in the barn, etc. Very interesting!

We made Hobo Stew! Our cold, rainy day was perfect for it!
During the Depression, hobos (people without homes and jobs) would look for odd jobs they could do during the day. In exchange for their
work people might offer them a meal or perhaps some vegetables.
Any food they were given they would bring back to the Hobo Jungle to
contribute to the stew pot.

So, all the girls completed some chores and were given
vegetables as their payment! They brought the vegetables to class
and we got busy peeling and cutting. We had garlic, green beans,
carrots, potatoes, black eyed peas and chicken broth...

After simmering for an hour it was delicious!

Oh yes, we had some pasta, too!

Next month... Addy and our Christmas party!
