The Heiress of Winterwood by Sarah E. Ladd

My Thoughts:

Privilege, money, and beauty are all that Amelia Barrett has ever known.  The one thing missing in her life is love.  In The Heiress of Winterwood, Amelia finds herself in a scandalous predicament involving an inheritance, an engagement (to a questionable gentleman), a baby (that is not hers), and a sea captain she's never met before (or so she believes).  How she plans on solving her problem is ingenious, but will it work?

Amelia Barrett has all the qualities I admire in a heroine- strength, beauty, kindness and fire!  She's a force to be reckoned with and yet she knows when to let her hero save the day.  We all need a hero from time to time, right?;)  Speaking of heroes, Graham Sterling can save me any day!  Read on...

Let me set the scene for you:  Littleton (questionable fiancĂ©) is having "harsh words" with Amelia while grasping her arm tightly. Captain Sterling steps in.  Littleton tells Captain Sterling to get off his property...

(p. 80) He kept his voice low.  "It will be my pleasure.  But you are warned, Littleton.  If I see your hands on her, or any woman, I will have no qualms about striking you down.  That would also be my pleasure."

Oh, my. (Pardon me while I swoon)

Yes, you will swoon, too. This book is all about keeping promises, trusting in the Lord and following your heart.  There is action (kidnappings!), love (that kiss on p. 309!) and intrigue (Who can be trusted??).  The Heiress of Winterwood is a stunning peek into the life of the privileged (think Downton Abbey) and an adventure that will take your breath away!

{MORE ABOUT THE HEIRESS OF WINTERWOOD}

Pride goes before the fall . . . but what comes after?
Darbury, England, 1814
Amelia Barrett gave her word. Keeping it could cost her everything.
Amelia Barrett, heiress to an estate nestled in the English moors, defies family expectations and promises to raise her dying friend's baby. She'll risk everything to keep her word-even to the point of proposing to the child's father-a sea captain she's never met.
When the child vanishes with little more than an ominous ransom note hinting at her whereabouts, Amelia and Graham are driven to test the boundaries of their love for this little one.
Amelia's detailed plans would normally see her through any trial, but now, desperate and shaken, she's forced to examine her soul and face her one weakness: pride.
Graham's strength and self-control have served him well and earned him much respect, but chasing perfection has kept him a prisoner of his own discipline. And away from the family he has sworn to love and protect.
Both must learn to have faith and relinquish control so they can embrace the future ahead of them.

Bread and Wine by Shauna Niequist

    My Thoughts:

Shauna Niequist writes with humor and honesty, cooks with passion and creativity and loves the Lord with all her heart.  Shauna is a true food entertainer.  She delights in creating joy with friends while dining at her dinner table.  I love how she encourages her readers to do the same, but to take baby steps if it's a bit out of their comfort zone.  I'm raising my hand high in the air here, but I can begin with take-out pizza and a salad.  Green Well Salad (page 81), perhaps?  (I have a pear waiting to ripen on my counter and it's going straight into Green Well Salad.:)  When I get a bit braver, I'm going to attempt Mango Chicken Curry.  (Doesn't the sound of that make your mouth water?)  I often forget that friends simply want to enjoy our company and feel at home. They truly don't care if your house is clean.  True friends are great that way.  Thank you for the reminder, Shauna.:)

After reading Bread and Wine, I wanted to be a member of Shauna's Cooking Club, wished I could be a part of her circle of friends and dreamed of visiting some of the many places she's traveled so I can savor the cuisine there.  Coming back to reality, I plan on trying each and every one of her recipes in Bread and Wine.  The stories behind the recipes are delightful and heartwarming.  As you read them you'll feel like you're visiting with a dear friend.

The first recipe I tried I was White Chicken Chili (pictured below).  It was a cold, rainy day and chili sounded comforting and nourishing.  The recipe had 4 ingredients (chicken, salsa, white beans and chicken broth) and was quick and easy to make- perfect for a Saturday night.  Did I mention it was delicious?  It certainly was.

The next recipe I tried was Blueberry Crisp (pictured below).  The stars of this delightful concoction are maple syrup, sea salt, old fashioned oats and sweet blueberries. We're also treated to a peek into Shauna's childhood in this chapter-  when hummus and yogurt weren't "cool".  Her memories made me smile.:)  The recipe will make you smile, too.

It was an absolute pleasure reading and creating with Bread and Wine.  If you're looking for a gift to give on Mother's Day or to a friend on their birthday, I highly recommend this book.  I plan on buying several copies to have on hand for "the friend that has everything".:)  Savoring the stories and the recipes was a complete joy that I can't wait to share with others.

(Pssst!  I'd love to read Cold Tangarines and Bittersweet, also by Shauna Niequist.  They are now on my wish list.:)  )

    The Book

As a follow up to her two-bestselling books, Bittersweet and Cold Tangerines, author and blogger Shauna Niequist returns with the perfect read for those who love food and value the community and connection of family and friends around the table.

Bread & Wine is a collection of essays about family relationships, friendships, and the meals that bring us together. This mix of Anne Lamott and Barefoot Contessa is a funny, honest, and vulnerable spiritual memoir. Bread & Wine is a celebration of food shared, reminding readers of the joy found in a life around the table. It's about the ways God teaches and nourishes people as they nourish the people around them. It's about hunger, both physical and otherwise, and the connections between the two.

With wonderful recipes included, from Bacon-Wrapped Dates to Mango Chicken Curry to Blueberry Crisp, readers will be able to recreate the comforting and satisfying meals that come to life in Bread & Wine.

    About Shauna

Mother India movie review and GIVEAWAY!

                                                                 My Thoughts:

Mother India is an eye opening and heartbreaking account of the many (over 31 million) orphans
living in India.  The news of orphans in India is certainly not unheard of but the 25 children living together as a family (ages 3-23) in this movie make the statistics so much more meaningful.  Their individual stories are ones of abuse, neglect, torture and abandonment.  Their days are filled with begging for money and drug use.  It's almost too terrible to imagine.  Thankfully, there is hope for some of the children through a local children's home called Harvest India.  While watching this movie my heart was broken many times.  I was touched by the way that this make-shift family of children cared for each other.  They took the filmmakers, David Trotter and Shawn Scheinoha, into their lives and shared their stories and circumstances.  David and Shawn even spend the night on the dirty streets with them.

Mother India is a short movie- only 49 minutes long.  It gets right to the point- touching your heart.  I loved watching the group of children go to Harvest India in hopes of providing a better life for the two youngest members, Polayya and Koteswari.  My greatest wish is that there could be a brighter future for all the children, though.  www.31million.org is the website that tells more about how you can help India's orphans.  Watch this movie and see if you can help make a
    difference.

    "Break Away" Movie Giveaway!

    The winner is Natalie!  Congratulations!!

    My Thoughts:

Pop some popcorn and gather your family together- but don't forget the Kleenex.  This movie (from the producers of "Faith Like Potatoes") is beyond good- it's inspiring.  It's story is one of hope- so needed no matter where you are in your life.  The tagline for the movie states: When it seems that you've lost everything, use what you've got and let God multiply it.  Not only did the movie deliver this message beautifully, the filmmakers lived it as well.  With limited funds, generous help from friends, and trusting in the Lord to provide, they were able to create "Break Away".  I'm so thankful that they were successful!  God wanted this message to be heard.:)  As a side note, the filmmakers also took on roles in the movie to save funds.  Francois, the main character, was amazingly portrayed by Frans Cronje.  He had such heart, conviction and believable emotion- you will LOVE him!

The characters in "Break Away" have a charming South African accent, but it was a bit tricky to understand at the beginning.  No worries, you'll soon be an expert.:)  The music was perfectly chosen to evoke the emotions being felt and the scenery was stunningly gorgeous and made me want to board a plane to South Africa!  The storyline and characters were masterful.  A good man about to lose everything turns to God to carry him through.  Lines such as, "You follow the Lord and we'll follow you." (a wife talking to her husband) and "This is truly an answer to prayer." are rarely heard in movies, but they are commonplace in "Break Away."  My heart was greatly touched and I was a mess of tears at times.  Drawing from the Bible story of the loaves and the fishes, we are encouraged to "give what we have to the Lord and let God multiply it."  It's simple and to the point, and beautifully represented in this movie.  You'll definitely want to add this to your home video library and share it with friends and family.  We all need encouragement from time to time and the message to "Never Give Up."  Bravo, Word Films!!

A Noble Groom by Jody Hedlund

    My Thoughts:

Let me start off by telling you that A Noble Groom is one of the most romantic books I've ever read.  Hunger, typhoid, battered women, old fashioned child birth (shudder), wild animals, a forest fire, and even an incidence of lice?  Yes, believe it or not, even the lice event was filled with passion.  Jody Hedlund knows exactly how to deliver stories that women LOVE to read.  She takes her readers back to 1880 into the lives of struggling immigrants.  Women are considered possessions and, sadly, romantic love is nothing more than a fairy tale.  Annalisa is a lovely young widow with no hopes of happiness for the future.  Her destiny is to be married off quickly by her father in order to save her farm.  Annalisa has given up on the idea of love- sadly she never even experienced it with her first husband.  Then, into her life walks Carl Richards.  He's handsome, kind, polite, yet, could it be that he's hiding something?  He doesn't appear to be a farmer or a teacher but offers to help Annalisa until her future groom (a distant relative) arrives.  (This is when you'll have to pop in a movie for the kids so you can really pay attention to the story!)

I admire how Jody Hedlund creates characters that are lovely, strong and endearing, yet they experience a bit of raw vulnerability, too.  Annalisa and Carl's story is not an easy one at times yet the strength they gain from each other is glorious.  Their passion is palpable and I swooned over and over and again!  "Carl Richards" is at the top of my hero list- dashing, kind, brave, intelligent and very handsome.;)    Annalisa is heartbreakingly precious.  Such sadness she's experienced in her short life!  Don't even get me started on her poor sister, Idette.  (Ms. Hedlund, you truly must write a happily ever after for Idette.  Please??)  I adored Herr Pastor and his wife, and sweet little Gretchen and Sophie.  Uri broke my heart with the measure of love that he had for his sister, Annalisa. As you can see, the characters in A Noble Groom became a part of my life while I savored the pages of their story.  Jody Hedlund truly impressed me with Unending Devotion last year (really loved it!) but A Noble Groom stole my heart.

    About A Noble Groom:

    Michigan, 1880
Annalisa Werner's hope for a fairy tale love is over. Her husband failed her in every way and now his death has left her with few options to save the family farm. She needs a plentiful harvest. That, and a husband to help bring it in. Someone strong, dependable. That'll be enough. A marriage for love...that's something she's given up on.
So her father sends a letter to his brother in the Old Country, asking him to find Annalisa a groom.
Then a man appears: Carl Richards, from their home country of Germany and a former schoolteacher---or so he says. He's looking for work and will serve on the farm until her husband arrives.
With time running out, she accepts his help, but there's more to this man than he's admitting. He's also gentle, kind, charming---unlike any man she's ever known. But even as Carl is shining light into the darkness of her heart, she knows her true groom may arrive any day.

Charlie's Angels and Pink Tennis Shoes

These two have never seen "Charlie's Angels" yet the image lives on.
In the days of 3 TV channels, my friends and I used to play Charlie's Angels.
I was always "Kelly" (Jacklyn Smith), of course.  (gorgeous!)
My little sister was stuck being Kate Jackson.  (Everyone knows that pretty angels rule over smart ones.)

    Sorry, Amy.

Can you spot the third angel? ;)

    Busy preparing for this.
Have you heard George Mueller's story?
    Miraculous.

Instead of asking for donations, he and his orphans prayed.
They never went hungry and his orphanages thrived.

But get this- before he became a Christian he was a thief.
He only went to church to poke fun at the members.

Certainly shows that there is hope for everyone!

My first pair of PINK tennis shoes.
I was so excited to break them in!

2 1/2 miles later I found out that "working through the pain" was a bad idea.
I won't go into details but I'm currently walking funny and waiting for things to improve.

    "sigh"

I always think of "The Mystery of Lilac Inn" when these beauties appear.
Katie told me that one day she would open a Lilac Inn.
    I. cannot. wait.

    Perhaps a mystery awaits us.

I just can't say "No" to a pretty cover.
Yesterday, a friend asked me if reviewing books was my part-time job.

    What could I say?
I absolutely love being surrounded by the possibility of a new adventure or romance.
Particularly while I'm in my flannel jammies and under a blanket.;)

The weather is below freezing tonight.
Is this what they call an Eskimo Winter?
(just kidding.  I made that up.)

Just looking at these makes me happy.

Mandy started volleyball and it's not as easy as it looks.
I can only do the old school underhand serve.  Do they even teach that anymore?
I bring along my books and phone while she plays.
(I planned on walking but you heard how that turned out.)

Maybe I can rock my pink shoes next week.

Celebrating at Sonic after Spanish finals.
    Everyone say, "Queso!"
    :)

    Adios.

    be anxious for nothing

    Faith.
How simple it is to tell others to have it, keep it, or believe it exists.
Until you yourself are in the midst of anxiety, trials and fear.

Last Sunday I was sitting in church and hopelessness enveloped me.
I had the overwhelming need to run out of the sanctuary and bawl my eyes out.

The service hadn't even started but, sadly, despair can strike anywhere.

I said a quick heartfelt and desperate prayer as the music started and pulled myself together.  Or rather, God did it for me.

    Oh yes, He did.

Then, as I listened to the minister, God spoke to ME.
    Yes, He did.

His message was: Be anxious for nothing.
    Absolutely nothing.
    at. all.

I've read these words before but today they sunk in. My heart soared!
They were an answer to my prayer- plain and simple.
My burden was lifted and I could smile again.

Please, dear friends, take this to heart.
Whatever fear, anxiety, worries you have leave them at the Lord's feet and then just let them go.

Philippians 4:6- Don't worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done.

Lead Your Family Like Jesus- An Amazing Pep Talk for All Parents

    My Thoughts:

A warm hug.  A wake up call.  Gentle direction that has changed my heart and richly blessed my family.  Lead Your Family Like Jesus is all this and so much more.  As I read this book I kept a pen in my hand at all times.  There was so much to underline and notes to take!  In just the first few pages I gained so much knowledge...

#1-The first item I noted is that I spend way too much time comparing my family to other families.  Facebook, anyone?  Are you guilty of this waste of time, too?  I'm now taking that time to focus on what God wants my family to be.  Amen!

#2- Another eye opener for me was acknowledging the fact that I need to be a servant for the Lord, not a servant to myself.  Wow.  This is tough for me but I'm working on it.  Such an easy trap to fall into.

#3-  Are you ready for this one?  Don't be a prideful or a fear filled parent.  A prideful parent uses their children's success to measure their own success.  A fear filled parent is controlled through anxiety and fear and we all know that God wants us to be anxious for nothing.  Most of us fall into one of these categories, but don't worry, Lead Your Family Like Jesus has friendly advice for us all.

This was just the beginning.  The book is composed of 4 parts:

    Part 1: The Heart

    1. Important Forever
    2. Say No to EGO (Edging God Out)
    3. An Audience of One

    Part 2: The Head

    4. Family Values
    5. To Do or Not to Do
    6. Staying on Course

    Part 3: The Hands

    7. For A Limited Time Only
    8.Teaching to the Test
    9. Follow Me

    Part 4: The Habits

    10. Time with God- A Dad's Perspective
    11. Time with God- A Mom's Perspective
    12. Moving On

The part of the book that touched me and where I am in my life the most was "the opportunity to influence your child's heart."  A story was told about a mother who raised very well behaved children that were always dressed nicely and knew to be seen and not heard.  Sounds good so far, right?  Well, when they grew up they had out of wedlock pregnancies, were divorced and had a hard time keeping jobs.  Ouch.  They knew how to behave in public and it appears that's all they took with them when they left home.  Compliance was the goal but influencing their hearts wasn't part of the parenting.

Needless to say, I've been working on influencing my girls hearts the past few weeks and it's amazing how the conflicts have lessened, homeschooling has been much more delightful and hugs have increased!  Such a blessing!

I recommend Lead Your Family Like Jesus to all parents who are searching for answers or just a bit of guidance along the way.  The chapters are short and easy to read.  They are jam packed with thought provoking questions, wonderful and reassuring advice, tips for staying on track, personal stories and shared comments from parents.  Tricia Goyer, one of the authors, mentions that she reads the Bible every day at 6:00 AM.  She states, "It's like getting a pep talk from a coach before you head into the football game."  God is the ultimate coach, is He not?  I felt that Lead Your Family Like Jesus was God's way of giving me a pep talk.  One that I didn't even know I needed.:)

Stress Test by Richard L. Mabry, M. D.- Thrilling!

    My Thoughts:

Stress Test grabbed a hold of me and held on tight from the first page to the very last.  It's an entertaining combination of mystery and drama spiked with a bit of romance and a touch of inspiring faith.  I often review books written particularly for women, but Stress Test is a book both men and women would enjoy- it's a rush of pulse pounding excitement!  The author, Dr. Richard L. Mabry, uses his medical expertise and masterfully weaves it into the story.  Much of the book takes place in the ER which is fascinating.  The main character, Dr. Matt Newman, is a likable and believable character and this goes for Sandra Murray, his attorney, as well.  God brings them together under the toughest of circumstances when Matt loses almost everything.  Not only is he kidnapped and accused of murder- he  suffers a brain injury and almost dies.  Believe it or not, that is just the beginning!  Matt Newman struggles to figure out why people are trying to kill him and why he's being accused of murder- before it's too late.  I anxiously read this book in 2 days, eager to discover the answers.  Thoroughly enjoyable!  I can't wait to read more medical suspense masterpieces by Richard L. Mabry, M.D..

They may not have enough evidence to convict him, but they have enough to ruin his life.
Dr. Matt Newman thought he was leaving his life in private practice for a better one in academic medicine. But the kidnappers who attacked him as he left his last shift in the ER have no such plans—they just want him dead. Bound and in the trunk of his car, Matt’s only thought is escape. He does so, but at a price: a head injury that lands him in the ICU . . . where he awakens to discover he’s being charged with murder.
Sandra Murray is a fiery, redheaded lawyer who swore she was done with doctors. But when Matt calls, she knows she can’t walk away from defending someone who is truly innocent.
Matt’s career is going down the drain. His freedom and perhaps his life may be next. But with the police convinced he’s a murderer and the kidnappers still trying to finish what they started, finding the truth—and the faith to keep going—will be the toughest stress test Matt has ever endured.
