The Heiress of Winterwood by Sarah E. Ladd

My Thoughts:

Privilege, money, and beauty are all that Amelia Barrett has ever known.  The one thing missing in her life is love.  In The Heiress of Winterwood, Amelia finds herself in a scandalous predicament involving an inheritance, an engagement (to a questionable gentleman), a baby (that is not hers), and a sea captain she's never met before (or so she believes).  How she plans on solving her problem is ingenious, but will it work?

Amelia Barrett has all the qualities I admire in a heroine- strength, beauty, kindness and fire!  She's a force to be reckoned with and yet she knows when to let her hero save the day.  We all need a hero from time to time, right?;)  Speaking of heroes, Graham Sterling can save me any day!  Read on...

Let me set the scene for you:  Littleton (questionable fiancé) is having "harsh words" with Amelia while grasping her arm tightly. Captain Sterling steps in.  Littleton tells Captain Sterling to get off his property...

(p. 80) He kept his voice low.  "It will be my pleasure.  But you are warned, Littleton.  If I see your hands on her, or any woman, I will have no qualms about striking you down.  That would also be my pleasure."

Oh, my. (Pardon me while I swoon)

Yes, you will swoon, too. This book is all about keeping promises, trusting in the Lord and following your heart.  There is action (kidnappings!), love (that kiss on p. 309!) and intrigue (Who can be trusted??).  The Heiress of Winterwood is a stunning peek into the life of the privileged (think Downton Abbey) and an adventure that will take your breath away!

Pride goes before the fall . . . but what comes after?
Darbury, England, 1814
Amelia Barrett gave her word. Keeping it could cost her everything.
Amelia Barrett, heiress to an estate nestled in the English moors, defies family expectations and promises to raise her dying friend's baby. She'll risk everything to keep her word-even to the point of proposing to the child's father-a sea captain she's never met.
When the child vanishes with little more than an ominous ransom note hinting at her whereabouts, Amelia and Graham are driven to test the boundaries of their love for this little one.
Amelia's detailed plans would normally see her through any trial, but now, desperate and shaken, she's forced to examine her soul and face her one weakness: pride.
Graham's strength and self-control have served him well and earned him much respect, but chasing perfection has kept him a prisoner of his own discipline. And away from the family he has sworn to love and protect.
Both must learn to have faith and relinquish control so they can embrace the future ahead of them.
