Before I start, let me tell you that this story will stay with you, haunt you, for a long time. It is a story of loyalty, friendship and redemption. I read this book about a year ago. I was not a bit interested at the time, but it was my book clubs choice and I felt obligated. At one point, and you will know what I am talking about when you read it, I had to put it down for a few days. But then curiosity got the best of me and I endured. In the end I was so glad I did. It is a part of the world that I knew nothing about and yet, now I am a richer person for having walked down this path. It is certainly NOT something that you want to share with your children. Let them discover this when they are adults and the world is much more complicated.
Jeff and I watched the movie last night and finished at 2:30 AM. Jeff stayed awake and was touched as I was. (He doesn't usually stay awake, so this is saying something.) We even discussed the movie for a few minutes after it was over. Please read the book first, as it is so much richer, but then revisit again with the movie. It is a tremendous story...
Okay I can't keep up with all your book recommendations :o) I am reading 'Bringing Elizabeth Home,' by Ed & Lois Smart
ReplyDeleteI totally agree. I thought the movie was wonderful and stayed very true to the book. What a powerful story.
