About Me

My photo
Mysteries, polka dots, California Rolls, TJ Maxx, cozy blankets, rainy days and getting the first spoonful of peanut butter out of the jar make me smile. Spiders, rude people, cold fingers and toes, baby leashes, people that don't wrap their packages before going to the Post Office, poison ivy and Math (pretty much all of it) make me want to scream. My perfect day would be spent with my wonderful husband and sweet girls- watching movies in our jammies! Of course, having the movie theater to ourselves would be great, too. Please pass the popcorn and M&M's.:) I am saved by the grace of God. He is my constant companion and hears my every prayer. What a blessing! I'd love to hear from you! Creek Edge Press- TOS Review

Creek Edge Press creates unique and wonderful Task Cards that follow the Montessori, Classical and Charlotte Mason philosophy of teaching.  They are designed for grades K-8.  The company was started by Amy Kate Hilsman, a homeschool Mom.  She created the cards for her daughter and once the word got out, she was filling orders for others.  Impressive!  This was my first experience with Creek Edge Press but I can definitely see why people were anxious to get their own set of cards.  They are genius!  Amy Kate Hilsman has done all the preparation for you, as the teacher, and now the rest of the work is up to your children.

I was given the Modern World Task Cards set to review.  The Modern World includes Victorian England through the beginning of the 21st Century.  Both of my girls are independent readers so they worked through the cards by themselves.  I had to remind them to stay on task from time to time as the Task Cards were a new concept for them.  If your child is a new reader then you are encouraged to work with them.

Each Task Card is different, but here is a list of some of the activities covered:

Encyclopedia Research
Further Reading
Definitions
Sketch and Label
Summarize
Biographical Summary
Literature Summary
Information Booklets
Posters
Collages
Lists
Display Board
Compare and Contrast
Time Line or Century Book

I will admit that when I first looked at the task cards they appeared quite daunting!  The teacher's manual (included with the cards) was very helpful, though, and quickly calmed my fears.  There is not an answer key as the activities are open ended.  One part of the teacher's manual that I especially LOVED was the fabulous Book List and Tips that Amy Kate Hilsman includes!  She has truly thought of everything and I was quite impressed.

Ideally, your child should complete one task card per week, although older children may work more quickly.  I had both my girls use the cards and they made notes when they completed a task.  You could also use different colored pencils, if you like.

Creek Edge Press History Task Cards Sets sell for $20 and they include the task cards and teacher's manual.  They also sell Geography Task Cards Sets for $20, Science Task Cards Sets for $18, Fine Arts Task CArds Sets for $332 and a Grammar Task Card Set for $18.

* I was given a Task Card Set in exchange for my honest review.  No other compensation was received.
