About Me

My photo
Mysteries, polka dots, California Rolls, TJ Maxx, cozy blankets, rainy days and getting the first spoonful of peanut butter out of the jar make me smile. Spiders, rude people, cold fingers and toes, baby leashes, people that don't wrap their packages before going to the Post Office, poison ivy and Math (pretty much all of it) make me want to scream. My perfect day would be spent with my wonderful husband and sweet girls- watching movies in our jammies! Of course, having the movie theater to ourselves would be great, too. Please pass the popcorn and M&M's.:) I am saved by the grace of God. He is my constant companion and hears my every prayer. What a blessing! I'd love to hear from you! Ireland?

Ireland.  My sister is going for a visit next month.  I am thrilled for her, let me tell you.  What a dream...
Later this month the girls and I will be taking part in our home school Culture Club's celebration of Ireland.  I just have no idea of what the girl's focus should be.  Any ideas??  The obvious would be St. Patrick's Day, but I would prefer they learn about something in Ireland.  Perhaps a castle, town, tradition, culture???  We also need to bring some sort of Irish food to share.  Any ideas would be oh so welcome.:)

The irony - we're doing Ireland next month at our co-op.

Irish Soda Bread.
Irish Tea (not the kind with alcohol - I mean how they serve it)

Kissing the Blarney Stone - I have a photo of my husband doing it. You literally have to lay down on your back and lean down to kiss it...not for anyone afraid of heights.

Irish lace? Irish chain quilt? Potato famine? Does it snow in Ireland? You know - St Patrick allegedly drove the snakes out - the secret - there were not snakes...Irish fairy tales? I'm searching for some - if I find anything good I'll let you know...Beth

Hi Lori,
You know they make the Waterford Crystal china in Waterford Ireland. It is an amazing process and would be fun to learn about.

Learn all you can about Ireland so when we take our trip we know where to go (WINK WINK)

No suggestions but a trip to Ireland would be wonderful! I bet she is excited! My computer is going in the shop Monday morning and I hope it doesn't take long to fix. I don't do very well with my hubbys laptop.

Hi Lori
Your sister should be able to bring you lots of goodies back from Ireland to help with your project. Irish things which spring to mind are: Giants Causeway, Irish dancing and potato dishes.
Good Luck.

Hey you! I need to call you and catch up. I saw a great documentary on Ireland's patron saints, and there was one that was amazing--exiled himself to Scotland after a major battle for which he was responsible. It was a great story illustrating free will and responsibility. I forgot his name, though! I'll try to look it up.

Lori-what a wonderful subject! My husband and I went to Ireland for our 25th wedding anniversary in 2004. A subject you might want to check into is the Irish Fisherman Knit Sweaters. The Aran Islands are really famous for them because the sheep on that island have special wool, I think it is extra lanolin in them. So when it rains and the Irish put on their jumpers (that's what they call sweaters) the rain just sheds off because of the lanolin. Also every family had a specific pattern so when the fisherman went out to sea to fish and unfortunately some would die, sometimes the only thing they could identify them with was their sweater pattern. Morbid I know but true. Also the Beleek factory as well as the Waterford factory was so interesting. As far as food: Irish Soda Bread and there is always Bangers and Mash (which is sausage and mashed potatoes). I hope all that helps!

Try the book of Kells...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Book_of_Kells. It is an amazing work of art. There are many many artist in Ireland...knitting is another topic you can cover..try the fishermans knot. I am not sure how old your kids are but, there is a big change in the demographics of Ireland these days...my relatives call them "aliens"or foreigners.
Also, one of the wonders of the world is in Norther Ireland, Giants Causeway http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giant's_Causeway I have been there and it is amazing.

Enjoy
